Ratio 3, ‘Spring and By Summer Fall’, 2008
May 9 – June 21, 2008
Ratio 3, 1447 Stevenson Street, San Francisco, CA 94103
Ratio 3 is pleased to present Spring and By Summer Fall, new work by Ryan McGinley, on view from May 9 to June 21, 2008. This is the acclaimed New York artist’s West Coast debut solo exhibition.
Ryan McGinley will present new color photographs that chronicle the summer road trips he has taken across the United States in the past three years. Inspired by images from nudist magazines from the 1960s and early 1970s, McGinley places his naked subjects in unusual and breathtaking situations. McGinley uses the vast and varied landscape of the U.S. as his backdrop, from arid deserts to lush green fields. An energetic feeling of idyllic freedom and youthful innocence suffuses the work. Floating bodies suggest an infinite weightlessness while other figures slip into smoke and constellations of fireworks. McGinley’s work offers an intimate glimpse into a playful constructed world of sensuality, adventure, and the sublime.
Ryan McGinley was born in 1977 in Ramsey, New Jersey. He has had solo exhibitions at Team Gallery, New York (2008 & 2007), agnes b. galerie du jour, Paris, France (2006), Museo de Arte Contemporneo de Castilla y León, León, Spain (2005), P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center/The Museum of Modern Art, Long Island City, New York (2004), and the Whitney Museum of American Art, NY (2003).
McGinley’s work is included in numerous museum collections including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, CA, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, NY, the Whitney Museum of American Art, NY Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León, Spain, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX, and The Saatchi Collection, London, UK.
